We encourage you to explore and play when you visit the site!
There are areas set aside for den building and adventurous play with natural materials to hand. Ask when you arrive.
Our wildlife, especially minibeasts and other creatures live more happily in areas that are undisturbed, so we have also put up signs around special minibeast habitats – please don’t start den building in areas with minibeast signs….
We have tried to create a mixture of areas on the site so there is something for everybody and every bug!
Other ways to enjoy nature & Have adventures
Look on the site guide visitor map for our willow domes – great for storytelling. The willow fence nearby is a great place to have a go at weaving natural materials. Between April and July, it gets taller every week and we encourage you to have a go at weaving in the new growth!
Check out our downloadable trails for extra inspiration, especially the self-led Science Trail. This includes a science-related play challenge at most of the 16 stations, printed on boards which are posted around the site. It takes you on a 1.5 mile circuit of the site. Examples include working out the size of a giant’s tent, making small boats and and creating bridges for minibeasts. All the science challenges encourage you to think, look and use materials close to hand.
We also run Wildlife Watch activities for kids on most Tuesday afternoons in the Derbyshire School holidays (not over Christmas). Look at the events listings to see what’s on when you visit or check our Facebook pages.
You can also book a Woodland Party for a group of adults or children – or a mixture. Party options include campfires, organised den building and much more.
