Health & Safety

We take health and safety very seriously and are committed to organising and monitoring our activities to minimise risk of harm to pupils, staff and the environment itself.

We keep up to date – for example with COVID-19 requirements.

We are inspected for health and safety compliance by South Derbyshire District Council and by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom. We hold the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.

As well as holding the nationally accredited Quality Badge, we follow up to date guidance from Derbyshire County Council and South Derbyshire District Council for example on what social distancing and hygiene measures should be in place around the Centre itself to minimise any risk to visitors and staff.

Check with your LEA, Academy Trust or Governing Body as sometimes this endorsement of our activities and policies will reduce your own paperwork for planning a visit – if we lead your activities.

For most activities, LEAs ask you to check with providers that the education activities have been risk assessed, which we can confirm. We also follow South Derbyshire District Council’s child protection policy and all fire regulations.

Self-led groups of 15 or more people MUST check availability with us before planning a visit as you will need to discuss toilet, wet weather and any habitat study arrangements with us.  Your visit will only be possible if there are no time or space conflicts with other groups.

Self-led groups on site need to carry out a pre-visit to do their own risk assessment – although you are welcome to use ours as a starting point.  You must also make sure you have adequate plans for wet/cold/hot weather, lunch arrangements and bag storage. There is a self-led group information pack on the School and Groups page.

Our general Education Session Risk Assessment can be downloaded here.

Session specific risk assessments are available on request.
