We encourage you to visit the site and look out for wildlife – we’re interested in hearing about what you find so please send us photos or descriptions via our social media channels.
If you pick up a Site Guide when you arrive or download a copy of our Visitor Map you will find the Bird Hide. It’s a great place to sit and shelter while watching the birds.
The bird hide is maintained by our volunteer rangers and the bird seed is provided through donations to our volunteer birdwatching team, Birding for Beginners. You are welcome to join these groups and help us maintain the site for nature. If you wish to make a donation please email rosliston@southderbyshire.gov.uk.
Birding for Beginners hold monthly walks at the centre, which are free. Find out more on their facebook, or email them at: birdingfor@gmail.com.
Wildlife Recording
If you are interested in recording wildlife and logging what you see please write on our Spotter Board (opposite reception).
We also organise regular surveys for butterflies and bumblebees, and have recently started recording damselflies & dragonflies too. We’re always grateful for knowledgeable volunteers who can help with these and go on our rota for counts and ID checks. Find out more by joining our Wildlife Survey facebook group or email us.
Any wildlife training is usually on a Tuesday as we time it to fit in with the Rosliston Rangers group.
We also run Wildlife Watch activities on site and organise wildlife events including different levels of wildlife spotting for all ages. See the What’s on? listings for more information March-November.
We can also arrange a wildlife-themed walk for you if you are part of a group or book experts for you if you want to arrange something a little different like a photography-themed walk. There is usually a charge to cover admin, staff or volunteer expenses.
Wildlife Recording across the District
Across the District there are lots of other places to spot wildlife too – including your own gardens! A simple way to log your wildlife and plant sightings is with the local (and national) database at Derbyshire Biological Records Centre.
If you have a picture please include it!
If you give permission for Derbyshire Biological Records to receive your contact details that’s really helpful if they have a query.
If you are already using a biological records app or website just carry on using that – as long as your sighting is logged you are contributing to local and national wildlife records.
